The Nasheed Choir: Hussnain Hanif

In 2025, a collaboration with internationally recognised Nasheed artist Hussnain Hanif saw 60 students from two Blackburn-based schools form a new Nasheed Choir.

A Nasheed is a Westernised form of mid’ha (praise), a 1,400-year-old tradition rooted in the Sufi practices of Islam.

These poetic forms of love, harmony, and peace are a form of individual devotion and rich cultural expression passed down through generations.

Over 12 weeks of engaging sessions, students from Roe Lee Park Primary School and St Mary’s & St Joseph’s RC Primary School worked directly with Hussnain to learn vocal techniques, harmonies, and the spiritual essence of Nasheeds. The project introduced young people to the ancient sounds in a modern and inclusive context, celebrating diversity and creative expression.

In a series of moving performances, children shared their Nasheeds with hundreds of people, scheduled both on the Melodrome Stage and with the Light Organ. During the performance, the Light Organ installation came alive with colour, turning the sounds of the choir into a sculptural array of light.

About Hussnain Hanif

Mohammed Hussnain Hanif, known locally as Hussnain Hanif, is a celebrated Nasheed artist who has worked with over 80 schools nationwide.

His practice blends Western and Islamic musical traditions to create a powerful and beautiful sound. Driven by the belief that music unites, heals, and elevates, Hussnain champions its power to foster peace, tolerance, and shared humanity.

A Nasheed is more than a song — it’s a cultural bridge. It connects generations, communities, and faiths through the universal language of music. It’s been an honour to work with National Festival of Making on this commission, and I simply cannot wait to showcase the work of the 60 children across the two schools over the festival weekend.

Hussnain Hanif, Artist

What an amazing experience this has been for our children. They have soaked up the experience of working with Mr Hanif and the final outcome is nothing short of stunning. We are incredibly proud to be involved in this inspirational project and are excited to see our children perform at the Festival over the weekend.
